Blepharoplasty

Scroll

The eyes are the windows to the soul. But baggy, droopy, and sagging eyelids can give off the appearance of being perpetually tired when in actuality, you are not. Blepharoplasty, commonly known as an eyelift, can minimize the look of aged eyes and make you look more rested and alert. The upper or lower eyelids, or both, can be addressed with the procedure.

Led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David B. Brothers, Plastic Surgery Centre of Atlanta performs upper and lower eyelid surgery for patients in Sandy Springs, Decatur, Duluth, and the surrounding areas.

What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic eyelid surgery performed on either the upper or lower eyelids, or both, to trim excess skin and remove or reposition excess fat and muscle. This technique tightens the skin around your eyes to minimize the appearance of drooping upper and lower eyelids.

Am I a Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your sagging, wrinkled, bulging, puffy, or droopy eyelids, this surgery may be a viable option. Whether your eye concerns result from genetics or the natural aging process, the procedure can correct them while still maintaining your natural eye shape.

As with any cosmetic surgery, it is essential not to smoke, be in good overall health, and have realistic expectations for what eyelid surgery can and cannot accomplish.  For example, blepharoplasty will not entirely correct fine lines like crow’s feet–Botox is better suited for treating those. However, the best way to learn whether blepharoplasty is suitable for you is to speak with a knowledgeable plastic surgeon with experience in performing the procedure.

How Is Blepharoplasty Performed?

Blepharoplasty is an outpatient surgery that takes between one and three hours.

A few small, well-hidden incisions are made in the upper eyelid’s natural crease, inside the lower eyelid, or right underneath the lash line, depending on the details of the surgery and what you wish to correct. Then, the fat and tissue are repositioned, and the excess, loose skin is surgically removed.

What Is Upper Blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty addresses upper eyelid hooding that can impair your vision and make you appear older than you are.

Incisions are strategically made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. The excess skin is trimmed, and localized fat pockets and the muscle are removed or repositioned.

This technique restores natural-looking firmness to the upper eyelid and can minimize the appearance of crow’s feet at the corner of the eye. The eyes will also appear more ‘open’ and not nearly as heavy. Once the incision fully heals, the scars will be faint and easily camouflaged with makeup.

What Is Lower Blepharoplasty?

Lower blepharoplasty addresses the under eyes where puffy bags and drooping skin beneath the eye can make you look tired or worn out.

Dr. Brothers will make an incision in the lower eyelids or directly below the lashline and reposition the muscle and fat for natural yet rejuvenated eyes. The result is less puffiness, and any signs of bulging under-eye bags will be gone. In addition, your surgeon may recommend a laser to further correct laxity in the area.

What Is Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty?

Transconjunctival blepharoplasty is performed on the lower eyelids when only fat needs to be removed. This incision is made inside the lower lids, and therefore, there is no visible scar.

However, this technique is not appropriate for patients with loose or sagging skin on the lower eyelids.

What Is Recovery Like After Blepharoplasty?

All types of blepharoplasty are outpatient procedures, and you can return home to recover shortly after the anesthesia wears off. You may experience mild discomfort, bruising, swelling, and sensitivity to light after your eyelid surgery, but oral pain medication can help remedy any discomfort. It is normal to feel some itching, dryness, and discomfort at the incision site. Also, your vision may be somewhat blurry as you recover.

It’s best to sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling. Also, cold compresses can help minimize swelling.  You should use any medical ointments and drops according to your surgeon’s instructions.

Dr. Brothers will remove your sutures about four to six days after surgery. You may resume wearing contact lenses and eye makeup in seven to 10 days. Most patients return to work within one week but should refrain from strenuous exercises for a few weeks.

How Much Does Blepharoplasty Cost in Atlanta?

The cost of blepharoplasty will vary based on your individual needs and the specifications of your surgery. You will receive a detailed price estimate that encompasses all applicable charges during your initial consultation. This cost will include professional fees for Dr. Brothers and his surgical staff, plus any required medical supplies and all of your follow-up care.

Please note that you can obtain financing through CareCredit®. In addition, Dr. Brothers also accepts most major credit cards, checks, and cash.

Blepharoplasty FAQS

  • How should I choose my blepharoplasty plastic surgeon?

It is essential to select a reputable, board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience with your procedure. Dr. Brothers is a board-certified plastic surgeon with years of experience performing facial plastic surgery.

  • What type of anesthesia is used for blepharoplasty?

Eyelid surgeries are performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on your specific needs and overall health. Dr. Brothers will explain your options and recommend the best anesthetic during your consultation.

  • Will I have scars after my blepharoplasty procedure?

Yes. All surgeries result in a scar. However, while scarring will develop, it is unusual to experience noticeable scarring from eyelid surgery. Dr. Brothers will hide your incisions in the natural creases of your eyelids, and scarring will fade considerably over time so that they are barely visible.

  • When will I see my blepharoplasty results?

While you will start to see the results of your eyelid surgery immediately following your procedure, it may take a month or longer for the swelling to go down and for you to see your final results.

  • What are the risks associated with blepharoplasty?

All surgical procedures have some inherent risks. Some of these risks include:

    • Adverse reactions to the anesthesia
    • Bleeding
    • Infection
    • Prolonged wound healing
  • Can I combine blepharoplasty with other procedures?

Yes. You may consider combining your eyelid surgery with a brow lift, chemical peel, facelift, or laser resurfacing to achieve complete facial rejuvenation.
