Women who consider themselves “flat-chested” are often concerned about obtaining natural-looking results from breast augmentation. That’s completely understandable, because you don’t want cartoonish results from your breast augmentation; you simply want to look and feel more womanly. With the right approach to enhancement surgery, your breasts can look and feel natural while being more in proportion with your body.
The amount of existing breast tissue is a key consideration when planning a breast augmentation. Because women with small breasts often have little breast tissue to cover the implant, the size, type, and placement of the implants must be carefully considered. Let’s explore each of these issues in more depth.
Implant Type
Generally speaking, silicone gel implants are often recommended for women with minimal natural breast tissue. Saline implants are prone to rippling, because the liquid saline moves within the shell, and these ripples (like waves on water) are more easily seen in thin women with little breast tissue, especially noticeable when leaning forward or bending over. Silicone gel is thicker and thus those implants are less apt to ripple, though it is possible.
Implant Placement
Implants can be placed above or below the pectoralis major muscle. Most plastic surgeons suggest submuscular placement for women with less natural breast tissue, as it gives the maximum amount of soft tissue and muscle coverage. If saline implants are used, this placement reduces the chances for visible rippling.
Implant Size
If an implant is wider than your natural breast, it’s more likely that the implant will be visible. During your consultation, measurements are taken of the breast and the chest to help determine which size will best give you an enhanced breast that also looks and feels natural. Implants that are modest in size and profile (projection from the body) generally produce the most natural-looking results for thin women with a minimum amount of tissue. The larger the implant, the less natural it is likely to look.
