Everyone loves some sunshine, but years of basking in the sun’s rays can result in not-so-lovely effects on our skin. Brown spots, age spots, and redness are bothersome signs of sun damage, difficult to hide with makeup. IPL is a non-invasive therapy that helps minimize the effects of sun damage by giving the sun a taste of its own medicine—intense beams of light! Led by board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. David B. Brothers, Plastic Surgery Centre of Atlanta offers IPL Photofacials for men and women in Atlanta, Sandy Springs, and surrounding communities in Georgia.
What is an IPL Photofacial?
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. Through a special hand-held device, IPL treatments deliver concentrated wavelengths of light through the skin’s surface to help smooth, clarify and rejuvenate the skin.
The light pulses work in two ways. First, they heat the skin, which encourages collagen production for improved skin tone. Additionally, the specific wavelengths of light each respond to a different shade of pigment in the skin, red and brown pigments in particular. The light absorbs these pigments to minimize discoloration and restore a clearer complexion.
Benefits of an IPL Photofacial
The benefits of IPL Photofacial are:
- Treatment takes only 30 minutes
- Very comfortable procedure
- Treats a variety of skin problems
Who is the Ideal Candidate for an IPL Photofacial?
IPL Photofacials are excellent non-invasive options to treat pigmentation problems, such as brown spots, redness, broken capillaries, or freckles on the face or body. However, because it works by absorbing darker skin pigments, it may not be suitable for darker complexions or tanned skin. Prior to any treatment at our Atlanta skincare clinic, we will provide a skin evaluation to determine what treatments will be safe for your skin and best achieve your goals.
What Do I Need to Do Before Having an IPL Photofacial?
We recommend that you schedule a consultation with Dr. Brothers. Several of our treatments can be used for anti-aging, so you want to feel confident that the IPL Photofacial is the best choice.
What Should I Expect on the Day of My IPL Photofacial?
Your treatment will be performed by one of our experienced laser specialists. After settling into our comfortable, relaxing treatment room, we will apply a cooling gel to the treatment area. This enhances comfort during treatment, as the IPL device produces a slight snapping sensation as it delivers light pulses. If you are having IPL therapy on your face, we will provide special eyewear to protect your eyes.
How Long Does It Take to Perform an IPL Photofacial?
Treatments typically take around 30 minutes.
What to Expect After an IPL Photofacial
No downtime is required after your IPL Photofacial. The most common side effects are temporary, mild redness and sensitivity at the treatment site. These effects should subside within a day or two.
Will I Have Scars After Getting an IPL Photofacial?
You will not have scars as a result of your IPL Photofacial.
When Will I See Results?
The IPL Photofacial treatment can achieve dramatic results with an optimal treatment protocol. Typically, three to six sessions will yield a patient’s desired level of improvement. Results are evident after the first treatment or two and continue to improve with follow-up treatments.
How Long Will the Results of an IPL Photofacial Last?
Results are long lasting with a good at-home skincare routine. You should wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen on a daily basis to protect your results (and your skin). The natural aging process will continue, and over time new signs of sun damage will likely appear. Repeating your IPL treatment series periodically can help you maintain a more youthful appearance.
Additional Procedures to Enhance Your IPL Photofacial Results
Dermal fillers that enhance your cheeks, chin and lips are great complements to the IPL Photofacial.

Financing is available through CareCredit® and Alphaeon™ Credit, and we also accept cash, checks, and most major credit cards.
