If you have excess, sagging skin on the upper arms due to aging, genetics, or weight loss, you may be a candidate for brachioplasty. The procedure is intended to reduce or eliminate excess skin from the upper arms. Led by board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. David B. Brothers, Plastic Surgery Centre of Atlanta offers brachioplasty for men and women in Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, Marietta, and Fulton County.
What is an Arm Lift?
The upper arms can be a problem area for both men and women. Little pockets of fat and sagging skin often develop in the area, and toning the muscles does not always give you the results you want. Brachioplasty is a cosmetic surgery that restores the contours of your upper arms.
Benefits of Brachioplasty
Arm lift surgery helps you by:
- Contouring the upper arms
- Removing the excess skin and fat that make the upper arms look flabby
- Eliminates folds of skin and fat that develop near the armpit
- Providing a long-term solution for “bat wings”
Who is the Ideal Candidate for an Arm Lift?
Removing fat from the upper arm area can be achieved via liposuction and brachioplasty. The primary consideration when choosing between the two procedures is the characteristics of the skin. If your skin has poor elasticity, performing liposuction may remove the fat, but you will have loose skin that hangs from the arms. An arm lift addresses both excess skin and fat to give the upper arms a shapelier appearance.
What Do I Need to Do Before Having Brachioplasty?
A personal consultation with Dr. Brothers, a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in brachioplasty for men and women, ensures that you are provided with the utmost care before, during and after your arm lift surgery. The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.
We also recommend that you consider your budget before having brachioplasty. This procedure is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. You are responsible for payment, and we offer several financing options so that men and women can afford their arm lift surgeries.
What Should I Expect on the Day of My Arm Lift?
The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia. In order to remove the unwanted skin, an incision is required that runs from near the elbow into the armpit. The incision is placed in the most inconspicuous location (inner arm toward the back), but some scarring will always be visible.
How Long Does It Take to Perform Brachioplasty?
For most patients, arm lift surgery takes about two hours.
What to Expect After an Arm Lift
After surgery, the upper arms are either wrapped or placed in an elastic sleeve to reduce swelling. Initial healing usually occurs in 10 to 14 days. Sutures are usually removed within the first one to two weeks. Swelling and bruising gradually disappear over three to four weeks. All swelling is gone in three to six months.
Will I Have Scars After Getting Brachioplasty?
Scars along the incisions lines are a normal part of the healing process. The scars fade in six to 24 months depending on your skin.
When Will I See Results?
Your arms will be wrapped in a compression bandage after the surgery, but you will be able to see a noticeable improvement in the size of your upper arms. You will see the results more as the swelling subsides over the next three to six months.
How Long Will the Results of an Arm Lift Last?
By maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle, you can enjoy the results of your brachioplasty for many years.
Additional Procedures to Enhance Your Brachioplasty Results
An additional procedure that may enhance the result is liposuction of the upper arms.
