If you are self-conscious about your lower body, you may want to consider a thigh lift. The procedure is intended to produce tighter, more attractive thighs and buttocks with improved contours. It is also intended to decrease irregularities in skin surface. Led by board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. David B. Brothers, Plastic Surgery Centre of Atlanta offers thigh lift surgery for men and women in Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Buckhead, Snellville, Milton, and Johns Creek.
What is a Thigh Lift?
A thigh lift can address many problems with your lower body that make you feel self-conscious about wearing shorts and other types of clothing that show your legs. Having extra skin and fat on your legs makes them look larger and can hide well-toned muscles. With a thigh lift, your legs look firm and attractive.
How to Get a Thigh Gap
One of the most recent ways to assess the thigh area on men and women is by a “thigh gap.” When you stand with your legs together, you should see a space between your thighs just below your pubic region. If you do not see a space, you may have some excess fat on your thighs. Not everyone’s anatomy accommodates a thigh gap, such as people with thin hips, so the technique should be used with caution.
Benefits of a Thigh Lift
The goal of thigh lift surgery is to give your upper legs a more toned and contoured appearance. This is accomplished by removing extra skin and fat from the inner and/or outer portion of the thighs. After the surgery, your legs look more attractive, and clothing fits you better. The surgery may also help the shape of your buttocks at the upper portion of the thighs.
Types of Thigh Lifts
Dr. Brothers specializes in thigh lift surgery for the inner and outer thighs. Based on your individual anatomy, he will recommend the type of thigh lift that is best for you.
Inner Thigh Lifts
The inner thigh lift technique targets excess fat and skin on the inside of your thigh. This area is most often what interferes with having a thigh gap.
Outer Thigh Lifts
An outer thigh lift, also known as a bilateral thigh lift, targets the fat and excess skin on the outer portion of the thigh. The surgery may help with the contours of your lower hips and buttocks.
Who is the Ideal Candidate for a Thigh Lift?
You may be a candidate for a thigh/buttock lift (thighplasty) if you have experienced a loss of skin elasticity in the thigh, hip, or buttock areas. You may also desire this procedure if your skin in the thigh area is saggy, flabby and/or has a dimpled appearance. If your thigh appearance improves dramatically when you lift the lax skin you may also be a good candidate.
What Do I Need to Do Before Having a Thigh Lift?
Having thigh lift surgery is an exciting opportunity to improve your body and boost your self-confidence. You should first meet with Dr. Brothers for a personal consultation to learn more about the procedure and ensure that you are a good candidate. The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.
Thigh lift surgery is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. As such, you are responsible for the entire cost of the procedure. We recommend that you review our financing options.
What Should I Expect on the Day of My Thigh Lift?
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis unless otherwise advised by the surgeon. Lifting the inner thighs requires only short incisions extending from the anterior part of the thigh/groin crease around to the buttock crease. Lateral or anterior thigh lifts can be performed as separate procedures if desired. The buttocks can be lifted with upper or lower scars. The doctor will discuss with you what specific procedures are available to solve your particular problem.
The patient is placed in a compression garment (similar to an elastic support girdle) at the end of surgery to reduce swelling and assist in the natural shrinking and tightening of the skin.
How Long Does It Take to Perform a Thigh Lift?
A thigh lift takes two to three hours on average.
What to Expect After a Thigh Lift
With smaller thigh lifts, initial discomfort is usually easily controlled with prescription pain medication. With larger thigh lifts, an overnight stay in a skilled nursing facility or hospital is usually required. This allows for pain injections, intravenous catheters, etc. Bruising and swelling usually subside within a month, strenuous activities are usually possible in six weeks, and almost all symptoms are gone in four to six months.
Will I Have Scars After Getting a Thigh Lift?
You will have scars after your thigh lift. Depending on what type of thigh lift you have, the scars will be on the inside of your leg or in an area that can be hidden with clothing.
When Will I See Results?
Full recovery from thigh lift surgery can take up to one year. You will see some initial results of your thigh lift before that time, but the swelling will mask the final results.
How Long Will the Results of a Thigh Lift Last?
With proper diet and exercise, the results of a thigh lift are considered permanent. Pregnancy, weight change, and aging can affect the results, but in most cases, liposuction is all that is needed.
