Liposuction

Scroll

Fat is necessary for the human body to function, but unfortunately, some of us have more of it than we wish. That’s where liposuction comes in. Liposuction is the gold standard for removing unwanted fat. Fat cells can expand (when weight is gained) and shrink (when weight is lost), but the only way to permanently get rid of them is with a surgical procedure like liposuction.

Excessive fat deposits can live on your flanks, hips, abdomen, or thighs and distort your overall body shape. Liposuction is a tried-and-true way to permanently remove these fat cells—especially if they’re unresponsive to diet and exercise—and give you the figure you have always wanted.

Led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David B. Brothers, Plastic Surgery Center of Atlanta offers liposuction for men and women in Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Decatur, Duluth, and Druid Hills.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that surgically removes excess and unwanted fat cells from the body through the help of a suctioning device.

Liposuction can be used to:

  • Improve natural contours
  • Target diet and exercise-resistant fat
  • Slim and tone multiple trouble spots

Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction works best for those with stubborn pockets of fat that do not respond to a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and diet. Liposuction candidates are in good overall health and have realistic expectations for their results. To get the best results, the skin should have good elasticity. It is also not meant to address or improve cellulite. It’s important to know that liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure; it is a body sculpting technique. Therefore, patients should be at a stable weight.

Liposuction can remove unwanted fat from the:

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Neck
  • Chin

The best way to determine if liposuction is right for you is to consult with a knowledgeable plastic surgeon like Dr. Brothers.

How does Liposuction work?

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. Local anesthesia or IV sedation may be the best option for some patients; this will need to be discussed with Dr. Brothers during your consultation.

After the anesthesia has been administered, Dr. Brothers will make a few small incisions (about one centimeter long). Next, a small tube (known as a cannula) is inserted underneath the skin and tissues, and a suction device breaks up the fat cells while carefully removing them. Finally, the area is sculpted, and the incisions are closed and dressed.

Liposuction only removes a portion of the fat cells in any one area. Therefore, it does not get rid of all the fat.

The procedure takes about one to two hours to perform, depending on the number of treatment areas and the amount of fat removed.

What is What is Recovery Like?

Most liposuction patients experience bruising, soreness, and swelling in the treatment areas. Compression garments may be wrapped around those areas to protect the incisions, promote blood circulation, and reduce swelling. These garments, which can be worn for one to six weeks, will also help the skin take to your body’s new contours.

You may be prescribed pain medication, but most patients choose over-the-counter pain medications like TYLENOL®.

You will be able to see a difference in the treated area almost immediately after surgery. Most patients can return to work within a few days, but you will want to hold off from strenuous exercise for at least four to six weeks. Remember, the more fat that is removed, the longer the recovery time.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost in Atlanta?

The cost of your liposuction surgery will depend on the size of the treatment area as well as the surgeon’s fees, facility fees, and anesthesia fees.

You will be given a detailed cost estimate during your consultation that includes the applicable fees for Dr. Brothers and his surgical staff, as well as any necessary medical supplies and your follow-up care.

We offer financing options through CareCredit®. We also accept checks, cash, and most major credit cards.

Liposuction FAQsLiposuction FAQs

  • How should I choose my liposuction surgeon?

Liposuction provides desirable body contouring results. However, these results are highly dependent on your plastic surgeon. This is why it is essential to select a board-certified plastic surgeon and to meet with him/her before the procedure to determine if they are the right fit for you.

Dr. Brothers is a board-certified plastic surgeon with years of experience in body contouring procedures.

  • What type of anesthesia is used during liposuction?

General anesthesia is the most commonly used type of anesthesia for liposuction. However, in some instances, local anesthesia or IV sedation will be used.

  • Will I have scars after liposuction?

Yes, all surgeries leave behind scars. But the scars that result from liposuction are minimal. They are usually undetectable once you are fully healed.

  • When will I be able to see the liposuction results?

Liposuction results are immediate, but there will be swelling. As the swelling resolves, your new body will be more noticeable. However, it can take upwards of six months for the full results to be seen.

  • Will I gain back any of the fat?

No. Once the fat is removed from a specific spot, it cannot come back there. So it’s important to be at your ideal weight before the procedure.

  • Can I combine liposuction with other procedures?

Yes. It is common for liposuction to be performed in combination with other surgeries. When loose skin persists, liposuction is done with a tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation, or Mommy Makeover. Stomach liposuction is almost always performed with a tummy tuck.

  • Can liposuction be done on the face? Or just the body?

Liposuction works well when done under the chin and on the surrounding areas. Chin liposuction helps to define the lower face.

  • How much fat can be removed during liposuction?

Depending on the area treated and how much fat there is determines how much fat can be removed. No more than five liters of fat can be removed.

  • How long does liposuction last?

Liposuction results are permanent. As long as you maintain a healthy weight, your new body shape should last indefinitely.
