Everyone has pockets of fat on their body that are resistant to a healthy diet and regular exercise. This is because the body does not shed fat cells naturally—fat cells simply shrink or grow in size.
These fat deposits can sit on your flanks, hips, abdomen, or thighs, and distort your overall body contour. Liposuction is a great way to permanently remove these fat cells and give you the slim figure you have always envisioned.
Led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David B. Brothers, Plastic Surgery Center of Atlanta offers liposuction for men and women in Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Decatur, Duluth, and Druid Hills.
What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that surgically removes excess and unwanted fat cells from the body through the help of a suctioning device.
Liposuction can be used to:
- Improve natural contours
- Target diet and exercise-resistant fat
- Slim and tone multiple trouble spots
Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?
You may be a candidate for liposuction if you have stubborn pockets of fat that do not respond to a healthy lifestyle. Liposuction candidates are in good overall health and have realistic expectations for their results. This is not a weight-loss procedure; it is a body sculpting technique. Therefore, patients should be at a stable weight.

The best way to determine if liposuction is right for you is to consult with a knowledgeable plastic surgeon like Dr. Brothers.
What is the Liposuction Procedure?
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. Local anesthesia or IV sedation may be appropriate for some patients; however, this is something that will need to be discussed with Dr. Brothers during your consultation.
Once sedated, Dr. Brothers will make small incisions in the targeted area. A small tube (cannula) is inserted beneath the skin and tissues to break up and carefully remove fat cells. After the area is sculpted, the incisions are closed and dressed.
Liposuction only removes a portion of the fat cells; it does not remove all of the fat cells in a given area.
Liposuction surgery usually takes between one and two hours, but this can vary depending on the number of treatment areas and the total size of those areas.
What Is Recovery Like After Liposuction?
Most liposuction patients experience bruising, soreness, and swelling in the treatment areas. Compression garments may be wrapped around those areas to protect the incisions, promote blood circulation, and reduce swelling.
You may be prescribed pain medication, but most patients choose over-the-counter pain medications like TYLENOL®.
Most patients can return to work within a week, but you will want to hold off from strenuous exercise for at least four to six weeks.
How Much Does Liposuction Cost in Atlanta?
The cost of your liposuction treatment will depend on the size of the treatment area as well as the surgeon’s fees, facility fees, and anesthesia fees.
You will be given a detailed cost estimate during your consultation that includes the applicable fees for Dr. Brothers and his surgical staff as well as any necessary medical supplies and your follow-up care.
We offer financing options through Alphaeon™ Credit and CareCredit®. We also accept checks, cash, and most major credit cards.
How should I choose my liposuction surgeon?
Liposuction provides desirable body contouring results; however, the quality of these results depends on your plastic surgeon. This is why it is so important to meet with your surgeon beforehand to determine whether or not they are the best fit for you.
Dr. Brothers is a board-certified plastic surgeon with years of experience in body contouring procedures.
What type of anesthesia is used for liposuction?
Most patients are given general anesthesia for their liposuction procedure. Occasionally, IV sedation or local anesthesia may be used.
Will I have scars after my liposuction procedure?
Liposuction requires incisions that will result in scarring. Fortunately, the incisions used in liposuction are tiny and often undetectable once they have healed.
When will I see my liposuction results?
Results are immediate, but these results will continue to improve as the swelling resolves.
Can I combine my liposuction with other procedures?
