Even with non-surgical options, such as dermal fillers and injectables, facelifts are still a part of any anti-aging plan for men and women. One of the most common concerns among those who are considering facelifts is what to expect after the surgery. The specific timeline for healing varies, but this guide gives you an idea of what to expect in general.
The Day of the Facelift Surgery
A facelift is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that you go home after spending some time in the recovery area of our surgical suite. The face and head are wrapped in a special bandage to help reduce swelling and allow the tissues to start healing. Plan to have someone drive you home and stay with you for the first few days.
The First 24 Hours After Facelift Surgery
You will feel like resting for the first 24 hours because you will still be recovering from the anesthesia. Expect to have some swelling, as well as tenderness and a tight sensation in your face. Stay comfortable under plenty of blankets and keep your head and upper back elevated. Any discomfort can be managed by prescription medications. You can get out of bed to use the bathroom or take care of other necessities, but your activity level should be minimum.
Days Two through Seven
After the first 24 hours, we encourage you to walk around more to keep your blood flowing. Be sure not to push yourself, as your body is still tired and recovering. Bruising and swelling may increase for the first three days, and then start to subside. You may notice some areas of your face feel numb, itchy or tingling.
Week Two and Three
By the second and third week, the swelling and bruising start to disappear. Continue to keep your activities light. Many patients are able to return to work after two to three weeks, but it depends on how you feel and how quickly your body heals. By the end of the third week, you will start to see the results of your facelift, yet some swelling will still be present.
One Month After Facelift Surgery
By the end of your first month, the incisions are healed with a slightly pink color. This will change over the course of the first 12 months until the scars are just slightly darker or lighter than your normal skin tone. Swelling is difficult to discern, and you may have just light residual bruising. You may spend more time outdoors but use a good sunscreen.
Full Results in 12 Months
Twelve months after your facelift surgery, all swelling and bruising has faded, and your scars are barely noticeable. This is when you can see the dramatic results of your facelift surgery.
