Plastic surgery for teenagers is a hot button topic for many. And while there is no consensus on this practice, it’s something that thousands of parents and teens opt for.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that teenagers aged 13 to 19 had 223,930 cosmetic treatments in 2019 (surgical and non-surgical). The most popular cosmetic surgeries among teenagers include rhinoplasty and breast reduction.

Why Do Teenagers Seek Nose Jobs?

Rhinoplasty, also called a nose job, can change the shape and size of your nose. Rhinoplasty is the most popular plastic surgery among teenagers.

When a teenager has an overly large or unattractive nasal shape, it can lead to confidence and self-esteem issues. Addressing this problem early, when it is safe to do so, can make a huge difference in a teenager’s emotional and psychological development.

Teenage rhinoplasty often helps with function and comfort, as well. This procedure can fix structural flaws—like a deviated septum—and improve breathing.

Before performing surgery, it is essential that the teen’s nose has developed fully. For girls, that typically occurs between 15 and 16 years of age. In boys, it takes a year or so longer.

It is essential that you choose a qualified surgeon with the knowledge and skill to accurately evaluate your teen’s facial anatomy and growth. An experienced board-certified surgeon will also ensure that the rhinoplasty maintains the correct proportions to the teenager’s face.

Because your nose is in the center of the face, even subtle changes can have a dramatic impact on your overall appearance.

How Can Breast Reduction Surgery Help Teenagers?

Excessive breast size can have many unpleasant effects. Persistent back and upper body pain, lessened mobility, skin chafing, shoulder grooves or indentations from bra straps, shortness of breath, and migraines are a few examples.

But physical discomfort isn’t the only issue with overly large breasts. There’s often an emotional and psychological element as well. For teenagers, this can be greatly enhanced. They feel self-conscious about the size of their breasts. That discomfort paired with the physical impacts can lead to depression and anxiety, lessening their quality of life.

For all those reasons, breast reduction surgery is very helpful for teenagers who suffer the undesirable effects of large, heavy breasts. The ASPS has found this procedure to be safe and effective for teenagers. This surgery has many valuable benefits, and young patients experience good outcomes.
