Pregnancy and childbirth can be a welcome wonder, but with the addition of a new family member sometimes comes hard-to-accept and even harder-to-reverse changes to your body. What was once a firm stomach and perfectly perky breasts can be replaced with saggy breasts and a wave of loose abdominal skin coupled with a pooch. For women who want to regain what they’ve lost from pregnancy, the mommy makeover surgery makes it a possible reality. What will your mommy makeover include?
What is a Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover is a surgical procedure that incorporates improving the appearance of the stomach and breasts (and sometimes the butt) by surgically correcting what has changed. Loose skin is often a complaint amongst mommy makeover patients, and the surgery corrects saggy skin that appears stretched out by excising it. Usually, a mommy makeover includes using breast implants to reestablish lost volume, tightening loose tummy muscles, and eliminating loose skin through a tummy tuck to redefine the lower body.
This comprehensive surgical technique is a surefire way to regain your pre-baby body, especially when dieting, exercise, and nonsurgical treatments don’t get you there. Along with the guidance and expertise of Dr. Brothers, you can address changes to the breast, butt, and stomach for restored volume, less sagging, and a firmer midsection.
A mommy makeover will include any combination of the following surgeries:
- Breast augmentation (with implants or fat transfer)
- Breast lift
- Breast reduction
- Liposuction
- Tummy tuck
- Circumferential tummy tuck
- Butt enhancement
The Surgeries that a Mommy Makeover Includes
In most cases, a mommy makeover includes breast surgery and abdominal surgery performed in one setting. For some women, additional procedures are incorporated into the surgery, which can include liposuction or a Brazilian butt lift (BBL). The techniques and procedures Dr. Brothers will use depend on what your body will best benefit from.
If you feel like your breasts have lost volume in the upper portion or that their shape is not the same as they once were, you may benefit from a breast augmentation either using a breast implant or fat transferred from elsewhere on the body. Breast implants and fat help to restore fullness to the breasts depending on how much volume is needed. Some women also wish to lift their breasts to a more youthful position and eliminate sagging skin on the breasts, which entails a breast lift. For those women who find their breasts to be large and uncomfortable, a breast reduction can be part of a mommy makeover, making the size of the breasts smaller while repositioning them higher on the chest wall. Together with Dr. Brothers, you can decide if you will benefit most from a single breast surgery or a combination of a breast lift with any augmentation.
In addition to treating what bothers you about your breasts, Dr. Brothers will address the abdomen with a tummy tuck. He can perform various techniques and tummy tuck modifications depending on how much loose skin and tissue there is, where it occurs on the stomach and the degree of muscle laxity under the skin. A mini tummy tuck addresses just mildly loose skin and muscle laxity below the belly button, a traditional tummy tuck corrects loose skin and muscle laxity above and below the belly button, and a circumferential tummy tuck fixes loose skin and muscle above and below the belly button as well as loose skin on the sides of the hips and the back. Naturally, the technique dictates the type of incision, resulting in a smaller scar with modified versions.
Dr. Brothers also performs liposuction on most of his mommy makeover patients. Removing stubborn fat from the waistline, thighs, and hips helps create a more cohesive and streamlined silhouette. Dr. Brother can clean the removed fat and transfer it to the breasts or buttocks. Fat transfer to the breasts creates a more natural augmentation and a minimal increase in cup size for a subtle boost. In the buttocks, the addition of fat for augmentation purposes adds shape, definition, and fullness to the butt for more of an hourglass shape and reduced hip dips. Adding fat to areas where it is deficient improves the contour and appearance of the site. Remember that when using fat for augmentative purposes, about 30 to 50 percent of the fat will remain, so you may opt for a secondary procedure to achieve your desired results. Around the six-month to 12-month mark is an excellent time to take inventory of your results. At this point, whatever fat remains from the transfer will stay permanently.
