Facelift and Neck Lift
Genetics, gravity, sun damage, and lifestyle choices all wreak havoc on the quality of your facial skin. The facelift is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries, eliminating deeper wrinkles and fine lines on the lower and midface. Neck lift surgery is similar, tightening the skin of the neck and reducing the appearance of jowls or vertical banding around the neck.
Led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David B. Brothers, Plastic Surgery Centre of Atlanta offers facelift and neck lift surgery for men and women in Sandy Springs, Decatur, Duluth, and the surrounding areas.
What Is Facelift and Neck Lift Surgery?
Facelift and neck lift surgery minimizes the visible signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging skin. These procedures are often performed together to maintain a harmonious balance between the features.
By trimming loose skin and tightening the underlying muscle and tissue, patients can see visibly tighter contours with fewer wrinkles and crepe-like skin.
Am I a Candidate for Facelift and Neck Lift Surgery?
The ideal candidate for a facelift and neck lift is someone with moderate to severe lines and wrinkles on the lower region of their face and neck. Candidates for this procedure wish to obtain an overall tighter and more youthful appearance.
Neck lift candidates may have muscle banding or excess skin and pockets of fat under the chin and around the neck, obscuring the line of the neck. Facelift candidates may have lost elasticity and have loose skin all over the face and a general tired, worn appearance.
Both facelift and neck lift candidates should not smoke and be in overall good health. It is important to be realistic about what these procedures can and cannot achieve. The best way to determine if you are the right candidate for this procedure is to have a personal consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon.
How Is Facelift and Neck Lift Performed?
The facelift is performed to restore youthful contours. The techniques chosen for your facelift and neck lift will depend on the extent of your facial laxity and the types of results that you hope to achieve.
There are a few options for these procedures. The correct technique, or combination of techniques, will be chosen during your consultation with Dr. Brothers.
What Is a Facelift?
The standard facelift surgery addresses the bottom two-thirds of the face (between the midface and the jawline).
Small incisions are made within the hairline above ears that around the earlobe and end in the hairline behind the ear.
Dr. Brothers will tighten the underlying facial tissues (SMAS) and remove excess skin. The remaining skin will be re-draped and sutured, thus reducing deep wrinkles and reshaping the outline of your jaw and facial features.
What Is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift tightens the area beneath the chin and jawline and along the neck. Neck lift incisions mimic those of a facelift—making it a convenient companion procedure—but may require an additional incision beneath the chin.
There are two different neck lift techniques:
- Platysmaplasty tightens the muscles of the neck
- Cervicoplasty removes the excess pockets of fat in the neck and chin
What Is a Mini Facelift?
A mini facelift may be appropriate for patients with a lesser degree of facial aging. This technique addresses lines and creases around the mouth and nose and fat along the jawline.
Incisions extend from the hairline behind the ear, in front of the ear, and end at the bottom of the earlobe. Skin and muscles are pulled tight and sutured closed.
What Is Recovery Like After Face and Neck Lift Surgery?
Most patients can go home within hours of the facelift and neck lift procedure.
It is normal to have pain, swelling, and some bruising around the incisions and in the lower face. You may be prescribed painkillers to help manage any discomfort, and some patients may choose to wear camouflage makeup to hide any bruising or redness.
Most people can resume regular activity after about two weeks.

While initial results may be seen once the swelling subsides, the more permanent results may not develop for a few months, as your facial tissue settles into their new position.

Because facelift and neck lift surgery only addresses the areas below the midface, some patients choose to combine their facelift with a brow lift or blepharoplasty to treat the upper third of the face. Alternatively, some patients select to follow-up their facelift surgery with BOTOX® Cosmetic (to minimize frown lines, forehead lines, or crow’s feet) and dermal fillers (to restore facial volume).
