Having a breast removed to treat cancer is a courageous choice. Now that you have won the battle of breast cancer, you may want to consider breast reconstruction. Led by board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. David B. Brothers, Plastic Surgery Centre of Atlanta offers breast reduction for women in Atlanta, Sandy Springs, and surrounding communities in Georgia.
What is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction is an option for women who have one or both breasts removed due to cancer. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Brothers is uniquely qualified to restore your breasts using techniques that create a natural, feminine appearance. You may choose to have breast reconstruction at the time of your mastectomy or after you have healed completely from the procedure. Dr. Brothers will explain each option so that you can determine what works best for you.
Benefits of Breast Reconstruction
The primary benefit of breast reconstruction is to help a woman feel more positive and confident after her battle with cancer. Many women see their missing breasts as a painful reminder of their struggle. With breast reconstruction, they are able to restore a feminine form and gain closure on the battle against breast cancer.
Who is the Ideal Candidate for Breast Reconstruction?
In addition to being in good health and having realistic expectations of your breast reconstruction, you will also need to have enough skin and soft tissue remaining to reconstruct the breast. With modern techniques, though, many more women are good candidates for breast reconstruction.
What Do I Need to Do Before Having Breast Reconstruction?
We recommend a personal consultation with Dr. Brothers. As an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, he is able to examine your breast area to determine the best way to restore your breasts.
Another consideration for your surgery is the cost. Insurance may cover a portion of the cost, but you should review your coverage so that you feel comfortable with your budget. We offer several payment and financing options so that you can have the breast reconstruction you need to feel beautiful and confident once again.
What Should I Expect on the Day of My Breast Reconstruction?
During your consultation appointment, Dr. Brothers will describe the breast reconstruction technique that is best for you.
Breast Reconstruction with Implants
Breast implants are the most common technique of breast reconstruction. In some cases, two surgeries are required. The first surgery involves the placement of the implant. The second surgery is performed to reconstruct the nipple and areola.
Some women are better candidates for flap reconstruction. The surgery is more extensive than using breast implants. Muscle, skin, and fat are donated from another part of the body. The tissue is then used to form a new breast, areola, and nipple. Dr. Brothers may recommend flap reconstruction if you do not have enough soft tissue in your breast area. Dr. Brothers performs reconstruction with pedicle flaps and free flaps. Pedicle flaps describe procedures where the flap remains connected to the donor site which preserves the blood supply. Free flaps are completely removed from the donor site, and microsurgery techniques are used to connect the blood supply in the breast area.
How Long Does It Take to Perform a Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction with implants can take one to two hours. Because flap reconstruction is a more intensive procedure, the surgery can take two to six hours.
What to Expect After Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction with flaps requires a stay in the hospital for two to five days. Your breast area and donor site will be tender for at least two weeks. You will also experience swelling and bruising for at least three weeks. The discomfort should be manageable with ice packs and non-prescription pain medication, but Dr. Brothers can prescribe medications if needed. You should expect your body to take at least four to six weeks to heal completely. This timeline is greater for flap reconstruction.
Will I Have Scars After Getting Breast Reconstruction?
Yes, you will have scars from your breast reconstruction surgery.
When Will I See Results?
You will see some initial results immediately after the surgery. Once the swelling subsides, you will see the final results of your breast reconstruction surgery.
How Long Will the Results of Breast Reconstruction Last?
Breast reconstruction is considered a permanent solution for mastectomy patients, but aging and weight changes will affect your reconstructed breasts just as these factors affect your natural breasts.
