Breast Augmentation in Atlanta, GAWhen thinking about receiving a breast augmentation, it’s best to consult a doctor if you have recently given birth. The range of time from when you give birth and receive a breast augmentation ranges quite a lot depending on the person. Here is a short article breaking down what a breast augmentation is, how it works, and when you can undergo the procedure post-pregnancy.

What Is A Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation — also known as augmentation mammoplasty — is a surgical procedure to increase breast size. During breast augmentation, breast implants are placed under the breast tissue or chest muscles.

For some women, breast augmentation is a way to enhance self-image and self-confidence. For others, breast augmentation is part of breast reconstruction after surgery for breast cancer or other conditions affecting the breast.

How Does It Work?

Step 1 – Anesthesia

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you.

Step 2 – The incision

Incisions are made in inconspicuous areas to minimize visible scarring. You and your plastic surgeon will discuss which incision options are appropriate for your desired outcome.

Step 3 – Inserting and placing the breast implant

The incisions made will create a pocket for the breast implant.

Step 4 – Closing the incisions

Incisions are closed with layered sutures in the breast tissue and with sutures, skin adhesive or surgical tape to close the skin.

When Can I Undergo The Procedure Post-Pregnancy?

The professionals at Plastic Surgery Centre of Atlanta recommend waiting approximately 3 to 6 months after you’ve stopped breastfeeding.  You need to give time for your breasts to “settle” after breastfeeding.  It is possible that longer wait times may be needed (think 6 to 9 months) if you’ve not reached your pre-pregnancy cup size. Again, it is always best to consult a doctor to figure out your personal best time to receive this procedure.
