An estimated 40 to 60 percent of men live with excess breast tissue that causes “man boobs,” a medical condition known as gynecomastia. Led by board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. David B. Brothers, Plastic Surgery Centre of Atlanta offers male breast reduction for men in Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Brookhaven, Smyrna, Midtown, and Gainesville who have gynecomastia.
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a medical condition that causes enlarged breasts or breast buds in men. Male toddlers and adolescents can develop breast buds, but most of the cases resolve before young adulthood. In some cases, though, the breast buds do not resolve, and men are left with the embarrassment of having enlarged breasts that cannot be reduced through diet and exercise alone.
Benefits of Male Breast Reduction
Male breast reduction removes the excess tissue that causes enlarged breasts in men. The procedure is intended to give the patient a flatter chest with more masculine male contour.
Who is the Ideal Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
You may be a candidate for this procedure if you are a man who has excessively large breasts, or if you have excess or sagging tissue in your chest area after losing a large amount of weight.
What Do I Need to Do Before Having Surgery for Gynecomastia?
We recommend that you discuss your gynecomastia with Dr. Brothers. The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.
Male breast reduction is occasionally covered by some, but not all, insurance companies, so we recommend that you verify coverage. Pre-approval or denial is obtained from your insurance carrier before surgery.
What Should I Expect on the Day of My Male Breast Reduction?
Excess breast tissue or fat can be removed with liposuction, excision, or a combination of both. Excess skin can be excised. The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia but can be done with sedation and local anesthesia.
How Long Does It Take to Perform Surgery for Gynecomastia?
Male breast reduction surgery takes between one and two hours.
What to Expect After Male Breast Reduction
You will go home several hours after surgery to be cared for by a friend or relative. A compression vest or chest wrapping is usually indicated for a week or two after surgery to help reduce swelling. Sutures are usually removed within seven to 10 days after surgery.
Will I Have Scars After Getting Male Breast Reduction?
In some cases, male breast reduction can be performed using only liposuction, which uses only small incisions. The resulting scars are very difficult to see. Other cases require a combination of tissue removal and liposuction. The scars for tissue removal are more significant, but the incisions are made in a manner that hides the scars as best as possible.
When Will I See Results?
You will see immediate results after your gynecomastia surgery, although your breast area will have some swelling. Full results can be seen after three to six months.
How Long Will the Results of Surgery for Gynecomastia Last?
The results of gynecomastia surgery are permanent, but you may develop new fat in the area as part of the natural aging process or if you do not follow a healthy lifestyle.
Additional Procedures to Enhance Your Male Breast Reduction Results
Additional procedures that will enhance the result are liposuction of excess fat in the axilla (armpit area) or contouring and flattening of the abdomen with liposuction and/or abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).
How Much Does Male Breast Reduction Cost in Atlanta?
The cost of gynecomastia varies by patient, and the procedure may be covered by insurance. Because insurance coverage is becoming more restrictive, we will help you determine what portion, if any, is covered by your policy. After your consultation, we will provide a detailed cost that includes the applicable fees for Dr. Brothers and his surgical staff as well as any necessary medical supplies and your follow-up care. Financing is available through CareCredit® and Alphaeon™ Credit, and we also accept cash, checks, and most major credit cards.
