Are you uncomfortable with the size or appearance of your breasts? Do you find yourself lacking confidence in your body due to a small-sized chest? Breast implants are a great way to boost your confidence, therefore increasing your quality of life. A common question when deciding on Breast Implants is, Saline or Silicone?
There are many important factors to understand when pursuing a breast implant procedure, but today’s focus is the type of implant. The two most commonly used implants are saline and silicone. These are also the only types recommended by Dr. Brothers of Plastic Surgery Centre of Atlanta. While both are very safe and give great results, there are a few important differences that should be noted.
Saline breast implants have a silicone shell that is filled with a sterile salt-water solution. The volume of the saline in the shell determines the firmness of the implant. Saline implants run a little cheaper than silicone, but there is hardly any variation in the cost of the surgical procedures to insert them. Saline implants require a smaller incision, and are therefore less likely to result in scarring. It is easy to detect if a saline implant ruptures, as the breast will change shape. Adverse side affects will not occur when the solution is absorbed by the breast tissue as saline is non-toxic. Drawbacks to saline implants include that many women find they do not feel like a natural breast, and there is a greater risk of rippling.
Silicone implants have gotten a negative rap in the past, but many improvements have been made to make them safer and less likely to rupture. They use a silicone shell that is filled with a thick silicone gel. Many women prefer them because they feel like natural breasts, and are unlikely to ripple. Unfortunately, they are a bit more expensive, require a slightly larger incision, and rupture can only be detected through an MRI. This is because a rupture does not cause the silicone gel to leak out and change the breast shape; it is cohesive and does not flow freely.
